BookTalk Screening and Expert Discussion, 29 October: Mary Shelley (2017)

It was wonderful to have a large audience last night at our first event of this year, exploring Ted Chiang’s novella “Story of Your Life” alongside its film adaptation, Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival. Thanks for the great discussion!

The Cardiff BookTalk programme is a full one this month, with another special event scheduled for next Monday, 29th October. We’re celebrating 200 years of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein by screening the newly released biopic, Mary Shelley, starring Elle Fanning and directed by the pioneering Saudi Arabian filmmaker Haifaa al-Mansour.

The film’s plot follows Shelley’s relationship with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, which helped to inspired Frankenstein. You can check out the trailer here.

We’re thrilled to welcome Dr Anna Mercer (Cardiff University/Keats House) to share from her expertise on the Shelley family during the post-screening discussion. Find out more about Dr Mercer’s work at her blog.

To accommodate the full running time of the film, this event will begin at the earlier time of 6pm in Cardiff University’s School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Maindy Road, Cardiff CF24 4HQ. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be served as usual.

All are welcome at this free event, but tickets are essential – click here to register for the Mary Shelley screening now!

This event is presented as part of Cardiff FrankenFest, which runs from October 22–31 as part of the global Frankenreads initiative.
