As part of the Vogue Visionaries series, Bernardine Evaristo offers advice for writers, together with some valuable insights into her own books.
Covering the writing process, as well as tips on getting published and finding your voice, Evaristo illustrates her thoughts with examples drawn from her key works, including Blonde Roots and Girl, Woman, Other. Her thoughts on developing narrative structure mingle with observations on how to survive the vicissitudes of the writer’s life, and the development of a healthy sense of curiosity and the ability to listen as writerly tools.
‘Every writer I read inspires my writing in in some way or another because I like to see how writers tell their stories and I like to see the quality of their prose but also the quality of their psychological insight into their characters. That is so important and that’s what I’m interested in as a writer. Obviously, I’m interested in telling the stories that haven’t been told because that’s what I’ve been doing all my life but when I look at other writers i want to be inspired by the quality of their writing.’
We will be discussing Bernardine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other at Cardiff BookTalk on Wednesday June 15 2022.
The event is free and open to all via Zoom. Book your place via Eventbrite at the link below: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cardiff-booktalk-girl-woman-other-registration-310957932547
